Wellbeing is a deeply personal thing—a specific felt sense we can all identify once we experience it. Life experiences can sometimes cause us to lose connection to our well-being, even forgetting the feeling entirely. Nonetheless, certain ideas and strategies can help us find, come back to, or stay connected with our sense of well-being. It is never gone; it is something we carry within ourselves. 

In all the years I have worked in the field of mental health there are countless concepts I have learned to work with. They form a scaffolding to help people understand themselves and their experiences, cope, maintain patience, build the skills required to succeed and return to their wellbeing when needed. Over the years, I have noticed that certain concepts seem more consistently valuable to most people. I wished I could get these concepts out to others who need or prefer to do their own emotional work. I wanted to offer a straightforward resource putting the tools and concepts into as many hands as possible so people could feel empowered and spoken to rather than at. I preferred the idea of offering ideas, observations, and perspectives rather than “lessons.”  The following pages are my first attempt at doing that. 

I invite you to keep this book somewhere you will remember, see, and read it regularly. There is no need to read the sections in order. Pick and choose to move through the material as it inspires curiosity or offers potential. As you read, practice, explore, and experiment. Most sections have reflection questions to support and prompt your own interpretation of the material. You will start to notice some concepts are more important to you than others. I invite you to pay attention to what emerges and build your way forward using these as jumping-off points rather than hard truths. I encourage you to take your time. Read a concept or two each week and use the reflection questions to guide yourself into a deeper connection and interpretation of these concepts or your own derivatives of them. Your inner wisdom is waiting – and will not disappoint.  

I always tell people “There’s no handbook for life” and indeed there truly is not. I believe the closest thing I can offer is this collection of ideas. I hope and believe if you take the time to consider and put your spin on the content, it can make a tremendous impact on your search for and maintaining wellbeing and you will in fact draft your own personal Handbook of sorts.
